Grab a jacket because tonight we'll be approaching record lows in most of the Northeast. Yesterday's cold front that passed through will drop by an impressive 10-20° everywhere from Newfoundland down through DC. The lows however are even worse: 20-25° lower! You can see where the cold front currently is below.
The thing is, we'll rebound back towards seasonal temperatures around Wednesday, 5-10° warmer on Thursday, and then the same thing will happen as yesterday: a cold front forming in the mid-west over the next few days will move through drop the temperatures back down 15-20° once again. It seems like another major system will move through at the end of next week on the 14th or 15th. Could this mean snow in the Northeast? Temperatures could be low enough for it.
Elsewhere in the nation, the western states especially Idaho Nevada and Utah are feeling the same temperature drop as the Northeast is, with only a few areas such as Colorado and the southern tip of Minnesota actually being milder today than yesterday. If you take a look at that surface map above you'll see the occlusion over the Dakotas and that will cause instability across the midwest over the next few days, the southern portion of which will eventually feed that system reaching the Northeast on Thursday.

While the Atlantic is STILL remaining quiet (Lorenzo was the last named system from October), the Pacific is already up to S, though Tropical Storm Sonia will only last for another 16-24 hours before weakening into a tropical depression and then dissipating within 48 hours.
I have my jacket ready. Seems like we're getting December temperatures a bit early this week.
