Happy 2014 everyone! To bring in the new year, we'll have a winter storm!
The basics for the NY metro area and into the Northeast:
Thursday: periods of snow showers, turning breezy in the afternoon.
Thursday night: snow and the winds pick up
Friday: leftover morning flurries, then turning partly sunny
Thursday night we could see 5-8 inches, but to see how much you may get see the maps below.

Eastern NY state and Western Massachusetts will get the most snow by far, maybe seeing up to 16 inches of snow. Remember that with colder temperatures the liquid-to-snow ratio increases, and with lower temperatures on Thursday night there will be fluffier snow, and those two locations I just mentioned will see the fluffiest snow which takes up a larger area.
But that's Thursday. For now, enjoy the new year!
