Strong trof off west coast will send a storm across the southland and up into The Great Lakes this weekend. Until then...much of the nation will be dry and cold.
Midnight temps in these cities will all be dry.....BOSTON 25,NYC 28,PHL 29, DC 30, ATLANTA 37, MIAMI 72,CHICAGO 17, DALLAS 34, NEW ORLEANS 45, SEATTLE 31, DENVER +4, SAN FRAN 46, LOS ANGELES 49

Picture
First storm of New Year heads for The East this Sunday. Most places will see rain....heavy rain from Gulf States up the Appalachians into New England.
Picture
This is the GFS Model for next Wednesday. It is the only
long range model to phase jet streams and come up with a sizable winter storm for The Northeast and guess what ?
We buy it over The Euro. So...if this works out...kids will be able to try out their new sleds in Northeast next week.
On behalf of all of us here at Metro Weather we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our site and wish you and yours a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Satellite shows a wide trof cut out from California to East Coast. Embedded within the trof are disturbances that can either combine to remain separate....still to be determined.
Snow is the Rockies will move east and that should be the next even for The East this weekend.
Picture
Above - today's map shows some lake effect from upper Great Lakes into Watertown area of NY. Lighter snows and rains in the southwest.
Picture
Above...shows where watches and warnings are issued.
Much of the blue is for wind chill advisories. Yellow...watches....red = warnings.
Picture
Map above is for this Sunday. Widespread precip in the east. The front from Boston to Ohio pretty much will make the boundary between rain to the south and snow to the north...with a wintry mix in between. Aside from that...rest of the NAtion...fair and cold.  Be safe. Later.

upper Midwest to Great Lakes....and in the Rockies.

Picture
Above - GFS Model for New Year's Day. It shows cold air
from Upper Midwest to Northeast...but other models are not as cold. I think the trend will definitely be to colder weather by 2015....so this time the GFS may be right on.
Picture
Finally...a shot of the North Pole. Clearly seeing nothing but snow and ice....so Santa has put the skis on his sled and they are getting ready.   Later.

Picture
Satellite shows dry air over much of the Nation: exceptions:
Gulf Coast...where places like New Orleans will get 2" of rain.Other area - Pacific Northwest. That system is the one that will head across the Nation and bring stormy weather
Tuesday/Wednesday.  Mainly rain and wind...but snow is
possible on the back side...from Upper Midwest thru upper Great Lakes.
Picture
Today's map shows that storm in Gulf which will bring
wet weather across the south and to the southeast.  System out west will cross The Rockies this weekend.
Picture
Christmas Day Map - storm in Quebec Canada producing gusty winds from Lakes to Mid Atlantic...will lake effect snows in the lee of the lakes. Next storm in southern Rockies will head northeast but should not be a large one.
Picture
This is the Euro Model for Christmas Day.  Not much different from previous map.....so hopefully this will not change much and the worst travel day will be Wednesday and not Thursday....nation-wide.  Have a nice safe weekend.

Picture
Satellite shows lots of action....and computer models are doing their best to resolve this hectic pattern.  One system is moving off Maine. Another noted over The Dakotas. We can see a stream of tropical moisture from Mexico down south as well as another system moving into the Pacific Northwest.
Picture
Map is for this evening...high pressure controls much of the Nation. Wet weather in Texas will slide east.  Wet weather in
Pacific Northwest will also move east.  These systems may combine to produce some very stormy weather in the Eastern Half of The Nation by Christmas Eve Day and night.
This will have large impacts upon travel...so stay with us as details become more certain.
Picture
Map above is for next Wednesday - Christmas eve,
Storm in Great Lakes is large and strong. North and west of the center...near blizzard conditions.  South and east - wind driven rain and even thunderstorms.
Picture
Above...amounts of rain (or snow) between Tuesday and Thursday next week. Most places in The East get at least 1" of rain...many places 2".  Where it is snow...that could easily be 10" +.
More on this tomorrow. Stay safe.

Another Nor'easter for The Northeast.....

12/8/2014

Picture
Satellite shows large area of moisture from Great Lakes to Gulf. This will translate to a coastal storm that will bring heavy rain and wind from Mid Atlantic to New England. Well inland...away from the big cities...snow will pile up..and
from Pennsylvania into Green and White Mts. of New England... 1 to 1 1/2 feet possible.
Picture
Map above shows a low near Bermuda which will follow the red dotted line (trof). It will get energy from the low over the Gt. Lakes. Elsewhere - quiet.
Picture
Map above valid for Tuesday nite. The coastal storm is near NYC.  The pink dotted line represents the difference between rain to the east and snow to the west.
Picture
Above...amounts of precipitation for Tuesday.  The green line represents 2.00" in Northeast.  Heavy rains hitting the PAcific Northwest.
Picture
Map above shows the upper air winds. The elongated area over the east coast represents a CLOSED OFF LOW....meaning that circulation is cut off from the prevailing westerlies...thus the storm on the surface has been captured and will stall or move very slowly.
More on this thru the day.  Stay safe.

TODAY/TONIGHT:
Current temps: 44° and rising
Today's High: 51°

  • Until 8AM: .10-.15" - 80% RAIN
  • 8AM-2PM: .10-.15" - 100% RAIN
  • 2PM-8PM: .45-.60" - 100% RAIN
  • 8PM-2AM: .30-.45" - 90% RAIN
  • 2AM-5AM TRACE - 50% RAIN, MAYBE A FLURRY FALLING (LESS THAN .02" SNOW, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT ESPECIALLY SINCE GROUND TEMPS WILL BE 35° WITH NO CHANCE OF ANY OF IT STICKING, IT WILL SIMPLY BE SOME LIGHT SNOWFLAKES FALLING SPARSELY IF ANY AT ALL.)

SUNDAY:
Tomorrow's High 39° with no precip
Temperatures go below 32° on Sunday night at 8PM.
Tomorrow's Low: 25° however all precip on the ground will have evaporated leaving no chance of refreezing.

MONDAY:
Monday's High: near 40°

The system will make its way through over the next 26 hours, ALL of it rain until possibly the very end of the storm from 2AM-5AM Sunday night when a few flurries will have a slight chance of falling, HOWEVER less than .02" snow will fall and NONE of it will stick due to temperatures being well above freezing.

Wet on both coasts.......................

Picture
Satellite shows next storm in middle of the Nation headed northeast to bring wet weather for the East tonight into Saturday night. Another system along the west coast to bring wet weather there.
Picture
Map above is for Saturday evening. Front and low in the east bringing mainly rain to that area. Some light precip.
in Northern Rockies...otherwise quiet elsewhere.
Picture
Map above shows amount of rainfall for Saturday. Heaviest to be the bullseye over New Jersey - NYC ....where 1- 1 1/2" of rain possible.  Below....you will notice 3 maps...these are
in order...Canadian....UKMET.....and The Euro. All of these models indicating a significant coastal storm for East next Tuesday....and we agree.
Picture
Picture
Picture
All 3 models would also lead us to believe that most of the precip. with this storm would be rain...since arctic air is nowhere to be found. However...with systems such as these..they can build their own atmosphere and especially inland...a heavy wet snow cannot be ruled out.  Now...below..the GFS Model ( U.S. owned)  This model hints at a storm but in no way is close to the others. That is not to say it is wrong, yet. So...if The Euro and others turn out correct...why is it that our own model is not as accurate. Simpy.... money.  We do not put the amount of money into our weather forecasting as so these other countries.   Have a nice weekend.

Drying out west....getting wet east.

Picture
The fetch of moisture over The Southwest is coming east and if it merges with energy from the north...coastal storms
are possible in The East.  Cold air will be marginal over much of The Nation and tending to modify next week.
Picture
This is the Canadian model for next Tuesday evening. Most of the nation high and dry except Northeast where they
form a pretty big storm.
Picture
This is The Euro. Almost identical to the Canadian except a bit faster. Euro is colder...which could mean more in the way of snow. Jury is still out on this....will follow and let you know. Seems to us that a coastal storm is likely as we expect phasing to take place. Question is...when and where

Satellite pix shows a train of moisture continuing for Southern California today with showers. Moisture over Texas moves east to renew rain threat for the east this weekend. The west to east flow does not mean any new arctic invasions....in fact nationwide - stays mild.
Picture
Map above is valid for early tonight. Much of the nation...dry....all of the wet weather western third.
Picture
Above...amounts of precipitation over the next 7 days. Clearly...the heaviest - west coast.

Picture
If you look for the colors...you'll know why California will be getting much needed rain.  Notice the storm off the California coast just churning away. It's the gear pulling up the moisture. Will that storm move east in whole or in part ?
The answer will determine as to whether a winter storm could be in the making for the U.S.
Picture
Map above is current. Front from Texas to N. Carolina will produce unsettled weather in the east right into this weekend.
Picture
Map above is valid from Dec. 7 to 11th - depicts how temperatures will average. The entire country above....
get that Christmas shopping done.  Below....map shows how temperatures will average thru Dec. 15th.....and again...well above normal.   Be safe....later.

Moisture heads for So. California and Tuesday into Wed. they will get heavy rain. Good for them...but may result in some flooding. A front will extend west to east across the Nation and north of it...cold....unsettled....south....mild....right thru the end of the week.
Picture
All of the heavy rain Tuesday - Wednesday...California.
Light rains and snow northeast and mid Atlantic.
Picture
Map above for this evening. Along front...light precipitation.
If you are north of it..rain and/or wet snow....if you are south...rain or showers.  Pattern holdls into this upcoming weekend.  No major winter storms seen.  Be safe.
